Burlington is the center of a small metropolitan area including West Burlington and Middletown, Iowa and Gulfport, Illinois. Burlington is the home of Snake Alley, the crookedest alley in the world, and has been called the Backhoe Capital of the World.
Burlington's roots are in transportation and manufacturing. Located on the Mississippi River, Burlington was a bustling river port in the steamboat era and home to the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. Even today one of the main East-West lines of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad crosses the Mississippi at Burlington.
Burlington is the home of the Burlington Bees baseball team, a member of the Class A Midwest League. Hall of Fame baseball player Paul Molitor started his professional career with the Bees. The Bees play at Community Field, which underwent extensive renovation in 2005. Burlington is also home to a campus of Southeastern Community College.
Crapo Park (85 acres, 34 hectares) is a city park with arboretum and botanical garden, located alongside the Mississippi River at Parkway Drive, Burlington, Iowa. It is reputed to be the site where the American flag was first raised on Iowa's soil, by Zebulon Pike in 1805. The park includes an arboretum with over 200 varieties of trees and shrubs, as well as botanical gardens of annuals and perennials.
Nicknamed the "Crookedest Street in the World," Snake Alley, located in Burlington, Iowa, was constructed in 1894 as an experimental street design. The original intention of Snake Alley was to serve as a direct link between the downtown business district and the neighborhood shopping area located on North Sixth Street.
